On January 14, 2019, Microsoft announced a new CSP indirect reseller transition capability that will affect direct, Tier-1 resellers who haven’t met their anniversary date or fulfilled direct bill requirements as part of the transition period defined on August 31, 2018.

Starting March 2019, all direct bill partner past their anniversary month without meeting the direct bill requirements will not be able to add new customer or services as a direct bill partner. They will only be able to conduct new business (add new customers and new subscription) as an indirect reseller, working with an indirect provider like Ingram Micro with a defined CSP indirect purchasing platform. Subject to March 2019, those partners can manage existing customers with limited capability only – adding or deleting seats to existing subscriptions, and they will not be able to add new subscriptions to existing customers as direct bill partners.

What does this mean for direct partners with anniversary dates after March 2019?

As a direct CSP partner, if your anniversary date falls after March 2019 you will need to work with an indirect provider with the appropriate infrastructure, support and services to conduct all Microsoft CSP business.

Transitioning customers to a CSP indirect reseller

Complying with Microsoft’s direct partner requirements is an investment for partners who do not have the bandwidth to invest $15,000+ annually for Microsoft support and enable automated customer billing and provisioning infrastructure. Investments that can reach upwards of $400,000 in infrastructure investment, technical support training, operational change management, and more. With programs like Ingram Micro’s Cloud Awesome Office 365 CSP program and Azure Flight Academy, Tier-1 providers can achieve comparable margin ownership with scaled support and CSP tenant automation.
