Ingram Micro Cloud, Samsung and AWS Deliver Windows as a Service to Mobile Prosumers

Ingram Micro Cloud, Samsung and AWS Deliver Windows® as a Service to Mobile Prosumers

At Ingram Micro Cloud, we’re committed to driving innovative cloud solutions for everyone. Today, we have announced that we’ve teamed with Samsung Electronics and Amazon Web Services to make a mobile Microsoft Windows-based Desktop as a Service (DaaS) offer available to Samsung “prosumers” – students, freelancers, entrepreneurs and others who use their smartphones as their primary computing device and want to access their own Windows desktop and productivity tools while on the go. This means they can carry their entire Windows desktop, files and apps in their pocket.

Samsung DeX and Amazon WorkSpaces

Samsung released the Galaxy S8/S8+ smartphone earlier this year, along with the Samsung DeX docking station. DeX enables Samsung smartphone users to connect their Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+ and the recently announced Galaxy Note 8 to a keyboard, mouse and monitor to deliver a powerful desktop-like computing experience. The Android-based platform gives users access to the apps already installed on their smartphone while also enabling them to interact with the apps in new ways.

Ingram Micro Cloud’s collaboration with AWS takes this mobile solution even further. Amazon WorkSpaces is a virtual Microsoft Windows desktop that is served from AWS cloud and includes Windows, virtual CPU, memory and storage. Amazon WorkSpaces enables access to your own cloud-based Windows desktop and all of your Windows-based files and applications from anywhere using a Wi-Fi enabled device, making it easier for you to work on projects from wherever you need to be. You can access Amazon WorkSpaces from any device – laptop, tablet, Mac or PC – and now you can access it on either the Galaxy S8/S8+ or Galaxy Note 8 smartphones with Samsung DeX.

With the Galaxy Note 8 or Galaxy S8/S8+ and Amazon WorkSpaces, you no longer have to take more than one computing device with you when you travel. Your Samsung smartphone can give you secure and convenient access to your Windows desktop and files from your monitor at work or from your TV at home or hotel when you’re traveling.

Ingram Micro Cloud Platform

The Ingram Micro Cloud service platform automates and manages the entire lifecycle of digital services delivery for our reseller, service provider and ISV partner ecosystem, with advanced service orchestration, subscription management and business analytics capabilities.

Traditionally, because of more complex configuration requirements, DaaS offerings have been primarily marketed to the enterprise customer. To help drive consumer adoption of Windows DaaS technology for Samsung DeX users and get them up and running with Amazon Workspaces quickly and easily, we created a new cloud store, powered by the Ingram Micro Cloud platform, to simply the set-up process. The cloud store automates the sign-up and WorkSpaces account configuration for users, making this Windows desktop solution available without the need for advanced IT knowledge.

What This Means for Ingram Micro Partners

The full mobile desktop offer, including Samsung smartphones and peripherals, Amazon WorkSpaces and several of our Windows-based SaaS services, is already available to our cloud channel partners in the US. Later this year, we’ll be making it even easier to provision the solution by making it available through the US Ingram Micro Cloud Marketplace.

The combination of Samsung DeX and Amazon WorkSpaces, in addition to our SaaS offerings, open many new possibilities in mobile computing for Ingram Micro Cloud channel partners. This is a unique opportunity to offer their customers a complete and secure mobile productivity solution that can be customized to fit users’ specific needs like storage capacity, compute power, communications tools and business continuity services.

What are the next steps?

Samsung DeX users who use Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ or the new Galaxy Note 8 can sign up for the 30-day free trial of Amazon WorkSpaces. This free trial can be accessed from the featured “Windows Desktop Free Trial” app in the Galaxy Apps store via their Samsung device while in DeX mode. The app is available here.

Ingram Micro channel partners can become certified Samsung resellers here, and can contact their Ingram Micro Cloud sales team at 800-705-7057 (enter BCN) for more information about becoming an AWS reseller.
